I was hoping that some beautifully picturesque Hebrideans would calmly walk up to us for a photo shoot.
Instead, the whole flock scampered away as soon as they caught sight of us, and into the next field. That is because they are a pretty wild breed, wary of humans, but "hefted" to their land, i.e. they stay within the boundaries of the land. On this particular farm the flock is allowed to roam from field to field over the whole property. Rona, the farmer, says they need very little intervention, being a semi-wild breed, they lamb easily and in the field, they browse in the hedgerows as well as graze the grass, consequently thrive off a richer source of vitamins and minerals which keeps them healthier and means they don't need extra bought-in food. They are resistant to sheep scab, and worm tolerant. Their tasty and healthy meat is highly sought-after, and in my view these sheep live as near a natural life as is possible.
You will notice that most of them are infact white as they are cross-bred with Suffolk, though they still have that wild streak in them. I shall be up there again in June to check the wool quality, and hopefully add it to my collection. However, I do still want a good source of coloured wool: Herbridean, Manx, Shetland or similar. Any suggestions welcomed!
